Many call it the eighth wonder of the world and in mid-winter there are few scenes quite as wonderful. Lake Louise is best accessed through Calgary, a quick flight from most US cities, and then it's a two-hour drive into the Banff National Park. But if you want the best hotel in Lake Louise, it's actually not located on the water at all but hidden along a rural highway and wilderness plain a short distance away. Post Hotel is the best kept secret in Banff and Lake Louise and although everyone will tell you to check-in to Fairmont's Chateau Lake Louise, the Chateau's super-small guest rooms and tourist-clogged lobby would make even a young Von Trapp child feel von-trapped.

The neighboring Post Hotel with its log-cabin style lobby offers comfy-Canadian decor and a critically acclaimed restaurant. Varying between active summer hotel and chic ski chalet in winter, the hotel rotates between retired and more active sports-minded travelers throughout the year. Temple Mountain Spa offers an indoor pool and gym in addition to whirlpool baths and spa treatments. Evenings are spent in the charming piano bar with its cocktail and wine service as well as ala carte appetizer menu before gentlemen tuck into the cigar bar at the edge of the property with in-house humidor and selection of vintage whiskey and cognac.

The Room

Cozy, charming, rustic style rooms are located within a series of interconnecting buildings that surround the main property. Entry-level rooms feature wood-beam ceilings with King size beds and patterned club chairs with more-modern fixtures like flat-panel TV screens and more dated selections like lackluster artwork. On our stay we opted for the two-level M-Suite with its main floor living area with two-person sofa and comfy quilted chair in cushy floral pattern near a crackling fireplace with tumbled stone face perfect for a Christmas stay, Upstairs, a fluffy King bed and additional bathroom offer removed sanctuary that feels like a private apartment. For even more privacy, book one of the riverside cabins with private entries and spectacular views of the Canadian Rockies.
